Cono Sur Bicicleta Carmenere 2013

2014/09/08 by Julie Boughn Leave a Comment

Cono Sur Bicicleta 2013 CarmenereReds | Case | $11 | Banks Wine and Spirits (Millville, DE) | Admittedly, I bought this wine on a whim because it has a bicycle on the label, but also because I’m a huge fan of the values to be had in wines from South America. This wine did not disappoint. It’s dark red in the glass, with glimpses of purple, a real beauty. Fruit on the nose, with hints of currants and spice. The wine is very drinkable, fruit-forward and well-balanced. It benefitted from some time airing out as it became more rounded over the evening after we opened the bottle. I’m enjoying this wine with grilled burgers tonight, but I could see it pairing well with pizza, BBQ and maybe even lamb.

Banks Wine and Spirits is my go-to store when I’m down at the beach; the store is just a few miles inland from Bethany Beach, right on DE Route 26, next to a shopping center with a large Giant food store. Great selection and prices on wines, beers and spirits. And, thanks to Delaware, no sales taxes! http://www.bankswinesandspirits.com/

The Prisoner 2012 Red Blend from Napa

2014/09/08 by Suzanne Henig Leave a Comment

prisonerReds-Case (if money were no object) | $52/bottle (Iron Bridge) or $40/bottle (Total Wine – but without the Iron Bridge’s excellent beef tenderloin) | Iron Bridge | Total Wine | This has been a consistent favorite of mine. Used to be from Orin Swift but I’m told it was sold—it’s still a great wine though. Wine Advocate (90 points) says “Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a big, peppery, meaty, Rhone-like bouquet with hints of bay leaf, unsmoked cigar tobacco, black currants and sweet jammy cherries.” I’ll go along with that!

El Prado 2012 Tempranillo Cabernet Blend

2014/05/10 by Suzanne Henig Leave a Comment

el_prado_tempranillo_cabernetReds-Case | $6/bottle or $72/case before discount | Total Wine | Hopefully I’ve built some wine cred with a few midrange submissions, so I can now offer up my go-to red for bigger crowds when budget plays a larger role. This is a real easy drinker, very respectable for the bargain price. Good with food or when it’s alone. Or when I’m alone and don’t want to feel guilty about opening a bottle.

Fresh, Raspberry, Currant, Medium-bodied Spanish Red Blend. This medium-bodied blend of 70% Tempranillo and 30% Cabernet has a rich red purple color, and displays raspberry and blackberry flavors on the palate. Silky in texture with a superb finish, it pairs well with simple dishes such as cold meats and cheeses or pasta dishes.

Alias Secret Agent Red

2014/05/06 by Jason McNamara 2 Comments

aliasReds-Case | $9 – $11 | The Perfect Pour | Mystery Red 13.6% alcohol. Who does not like a little mystery in their life? Alias’ Secret Agent Red is one of the best blends I have tasted, especially under the $10.00 price point. Aromas and flavors of blueberry, chocolate mint flow with a silky, yet fruity and medium bodied finish. It was also ranked a 91 by the beverage testing instate and also ranked top 10 wines under $10.00 in the World. I recommend this wine breathe for a little while – the cabernet sauvignon part of the blend needs to air out.

Farnese Edizione Cinque Autoctoni Montepulciano Sangiovese Malvasia Nera Primitivo Negroamaro

Edizione Farnese Cinque AutoctoniReds-Case | $42 | Special Order – Decanter | Sticker shock I realize but holy crap, you must drink this wine. You never see a blend like this from Italy and everything about this wine including the heft of the glass of the bottle screams quality. The taste is off the charts and the blend offers big full flavor of Southern Italy (Primitivo, Negroamaro) with an awesome balance of milder Italian reds to deliver a fantastic wine. Tannins, yes, but smooth, spicy vanilla and you can taste some plums and raisins (okay you can call them currants if you’re Fancy Nancy). Had this in Little Italy in Baltimore after helping celebrate a legal and long-overdue wedding. I know it’s a lot of money, but get this and a hunk of cheese instead of going out to dinner and you won’t be sorry. Wine nerd note: Cinque Autoctoni = 5 indigenous grapes used to make the wine. This is the premium wine you try. Eric Stein at Decanter can order it for you – 1 case = 6 bottles = $270 or so with tax.

Trentadue Old Patch Red Zinfandel Petite Sirah Carignane

2014/03/02 by Graham Getty Leave a Comment

trentadueReds-Case | $13 | Decanter | Awesome California red blend (primarily Zinfandel) – fantastic on its own or with big meats or heavy cheeses. 13.9% alcohol is well balanced and the 70% Zinfandel 20% Petite Sirah and 10% Carignane work fantastically well together. Great big red.
