Shenandoah Vineyards of California Amador County 2011 Black Muscat

2014/05/28 by Frank Hazzard Leave a Comment

Shenandoah Black MuscatWhites-Bottle | $14 | Perfect Pour | Who knew California has a Shenandoah Valley? Although the most expensive wines by volume tend to be dessert wines, there are some good values among them.

My wife and I served this one with strawberry shortcake last night and it seemed to pair well.

Too often dessert wines can be sickeningly sweet. This wine, derived from the Black Muscat grape is different. We found it to be slightly sweet and fruity but not over the top.

Testarosa Santa Lucia Highlands 2011 Chardonnay

2014/05/28 by Frank Hazzard Leave a Comment

Testarosa ChardonnayWhites-Bottle | $40 | Total Wine | If chard is your thing, this is your wine. Smoother than silk. Great complexity. The only problem was the bottle was too small!. Although $40 is a lot of money for a white, rest assured that it is a legitimate 90 points. This is the good stuff.

Cougar Crest Viognier

2014/05/10 by Suzanne Henig Leave a Comment

Cougar-Crest-ViognierWhites-Bottle | $27 | Iron Bridge Wine Company | Cougar Crest has chosen Viognier as their signature white wine. It is the only white grape in their estate vineyards. They chose it for its unique heady aromas, rich mouth feel and the fact that it is so different from Chardonnay! Floral, citrus, and melon aromas tempt the nose, and pear, peach and tropical flavors please the palate. A smooth honey-like finish gives depth and length to a wine that can be sipped by itself but also pair very well with food, such as seared scallops.

91 Points Wine Spectator
Gold San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

Domaine Fourrey Premier Cru Chablis 2010

2014/04/17 by Chris McNeal Leave a Comment

Domaine_Fourrey_Chablis_2010Whites-Bottle | $30 | Perfect Pour |Spring is finally here! Oysters and Chablis [all whites from Chablis are 100% chardonnay for the non-Francophiles], is there nothing better? Lean, mineral driven, with notes of apple and pear. This one goes quick, and can’t be replaced with the lower quality village wines. Bought at The Perfect Pour for $30.

Meursault Les Vireulis Chardonnay 2009Whites-Bottle | $60 | Special Order ? TBD | When you can’t throw down the dough for Puligny-Montrachet, this Meursault will fit the bill nicely. Not a patio pounder, but this wine will appeal to delicate palates with layers of citrus, light butter and hazelnut. A special occasion wine for the Chardonnay aficionado. Buy a bottle.

Sophie Te Blanche Sauvignon Blanc 2012

2014/04/04 by Graham Getty Leave a Comment

Sophie Te Blanche Sauvignon Blanc 2012Whites-Bottle | $15 | Decanter | Lovely South African Sauvignon Blanc. Don’t know why everybody went crazy for Kim Crawford’s Marlborough Pineapple infused version of Sauvignon Blanc, but this South African version is lovely with just subtle hints of citrus and flowers. Great wine with garlic roasted chicken or grilled chicken with a mango salsa. Probably not worth twice the cost of Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc but you could buy a bottle of each and see if you can taste the difference between an $8 Sauvignon Blanc (Monkey Bay – which is a great house white or buy by the case for wedding / party wine) and this $15 Sauvignon Blanc. Get some prosciutto and ripe cantaloupe and drink up!
